Okay, so maybe I took some liberty with the title: "A Renegade Curse So Fourth Wing." I combined titles from three spectacular bestselling book series. These days, if you haven't heard of Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer, and Renegades by Marissa Meyer, you're probably living under a rock.
At least, that's what my sixteen-year-old niece would say.
Finding the ideal book can be challenging. Allow me to assist by providing the top three recommendations for YA Fantasy/Romance as suggested by my niece (and me!).
#1: A Curse So Dark and Lonely has great world-building, so we'll start there. If you're one for getting lost in a faraway land, Emberfall might be the place to do it in. Monsters. Rogues. Curses. This series is everything you'd want in the retelling of a classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, except in this story, the girl doesn't need saving--although, who doesn't want to sit in a library undisturbed? That's why this one is ranked way up there.
It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she's instead somehow sucked into Rhen's cursed world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom.
A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.
#2: Renegades has a plot that won't stop. If your schtick is star-crossed lovers, high-speed action, and characters you can truly connect with, then this is the book for you! Get ready to be swept away by the passion, danger, and betrayal that will tug at your heartstrings. Whether you're a fan of Sci-Fi, Superheroes, or Villains, this book is a must-read that delves deep into the world of dystopia.
Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies―humans with extraordinary abilities―who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice―and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.
#3: War college for dragon riders. Need I say more? Fourth Wing immerses the reader in an unrelenting journey. Succeed or perish. The character development and world-building are unparalleled. The pacing is impeccable, making it a must-read for fans of slow-burn romances, enemies-to-lovers dynamics, and intense romantic tension that leaps off the page.
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
